Guest PhD Insurance

Healthcare insurance for guest PhD students and their family members

It is mandatory for all expats to have a healthcare insurance during their stay in the Netherlands. If you are employed in the Netherlands, you’ll need to take out a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. If you have a scholarship, or if you finance your stay in the Netherlands yourself, you could be excluded from the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance and you have to choose another type of insurance. Your immigration advisor at Expat Center Food Valley will inform you about this.

Expat Center Food Valley can arrange several types of insurance for you. On this page you will see an overview to help you make a choice between the insurances. Note that insurances are complex financial products. You should read the terms and conditions from the insurance before making your choice.

* A deductible is the amount of money that you have to pay yourself for your healthcare each year before the insurance will reimburse your expenses.

For example:

If you have a hospital bill of €1000, the hospital sends the bill to AGHC, AGHC pays €1000 to the hospital, they check your file and see that you have not yet paid this year’s deductible and they send you a bill of €220. If you then also have a bill of €100 for medicine, AGHC pays €100 to your pharmacist and since you have already paid your deductible this year, they won’t send you a bill.

If your medical expenses are between €0 and €220, you’ll pay your actual expenses and your remaining deductible is reduced by the same amount.

If you have no medical expenses, you don’t pay your deductible.
